Culture and Leadership Programme

In the pursuit of Improving everyone’s Life at LUHFT and ensuring everyone is proud to learn, work and receive care here, LUHFT has been following the NHS England Culture and Leadership Programme since 2022. The four-phase tried and tested, programme has an extremely high success rate, with an evidence-based approach to nurturing compassionate and inclusive cultures in healthcare.

You can find out more about the programme and what it means for LUHFT by watching the short video below:

What are each of the four phases of the programme and what have they told us about Life at LUHFT?

The Scoping phase [Completed December 2022]: Consisted of identifying LUHFT’s cultural destination, recruiting the Culture Change Team [Now Advancing Culture Together] and building the case for change.

The Discovery Phase [Completed May 2023]:

The discovery phase of the programme, consisted of several engagement initiatives, each with the aim of discovering the then cultural climate of the organisation. This included asking staff, patients, partners, and the trust board what it feels like to work here, to receive care here and what it feels like to work in partnership with LUHFT. Culture data was also considered, using six culture elements to assess. Key findings can be found within each of the reports below:

LUHFT Board interview diagnostic report [May 2023]

LUHFT Leadership Workforce analysis diagnostic report [May 2023]

LUHFT External Partners diagnostic report [June 2023]

The Design Phase [Completed September 2023]:

The design phase of the programme included the Synthesis of findings for the Discovery phase of the programme. Key findings centred around developing and supporting LUHFT leaders to lead with compassion, inclusivity and in a collective way.  There was also appreciation for the need to ensure everyone at LUHFT has a voice and an opportunity to have their say in the way things are done. Kindness and compassion, woven into all LUHFT practices including recruitment, resolution of issues, the way we behave and feedback, was also seen as a huge opportunity to improve the culture of our workplace.

The Delivery Phase [Ongoing]:

Now that LUHFT has an understanding of the cultural destination of the organisation, work is underway to support everyone to feel proud to come to work here. This includes a number of key cultural priorities for 2024 which include:

  • Leadership development
  • Developing a Leadership ethos & framework
  • Developing a Values & Behaviour framework
  • Defining the LUHFT Culture Network operating model (You can find out more about the network here)
  • Consideration of how best to reward, recognise and celebrate our colleagues.
  • How LUHFT plans for the future; including talent and succession planning.
