Pay Progression FAQs

What is the Pay Progression Policy?

Pay Progression is a national mandate from the NHS which applies to anyone on an Agenda for Change contracts, and will be live from 1st April 2023. It states that any progression through incremental pay points in all pay bands will be conditional on colleagues achieving locally agreed performance requirements.

Why are appraisals now linked to pay progression?

A key objective of this new policy is to put personal development at the heart of pay progression. This means that any staff who are due a pay-step point must have both an appraisal in the last 12 months and be fully compliant in their mandatory training.

How can I check if I am due a pay-step point?

All colleagues and managers have a joint responsibility to check when their pay-step is due and book in their pay progression meeting. All colleagues can check ESR for their pay progression date, as it will be displayed on your payslip. Managers can keep track of compliance and ensure training and appraisals are completed in advance of the pay-step due date.
