Myers Briggs (MBTI)

Description

The Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective personality self report assessment indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. Type provides a framework for understanding individual differences, and provides a dynamic model of individual development. Broadly speaking there are two applications for MBTI. The first is through an individual assessment with an accredited MBTI facilitator and the second is aimed at team development. The individual assessment will take place on a 1:1 basis and looks to raise self-awareness across four categories: Introversion or extroversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, judging or perceiving.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, you will be provided with your 'Type' based on how you responded to the assessment. This will help you to:

  • Raise awareness of your own personality type and of your colleagues
  • Understand how to improve your working and personal relationships
  • Identify similarities and differences between people and how to adapt your behaviour to increase understanding of others
  • Understand how you contribute to your team
  • Understand how you cope with change in the workplace

Intended Audience

If you are a manager and interested in undertaking a 1:1 assessment (approximately 1.5 hrs) to better understand your personality type and how this can help with your personal development, contact michael.moore@liverpoolft.nhs.uk for more details. Further Information

If you are in the process of planning team development activities with your team, then you might consider incorporating MBTI into your team development day. Teams work better when people understand themselves and one another. Team members who seek to understand one another will likely improve their overall team effectiveness because their communication is better. By attending a team development session, team members can explore their personality characteristics, their likely contributions to a team, potential areas for growth, as well as suggested actions steps for improvement. By comparing their preferred approaches to work and relationships to those of their team mates, they will develop true self-awareness and stronger connections.

The application of type theory as part of your team development programme can help promote an atmosphere of understanding, clear communication and mutual respect. All of these are integral to a high performing team.
