Elevate Programme

I am delighted as Chief People Officer at LUHFT to announce the launch of the Elevate Leadership Programme.

This is a bespoke leadership course set up in partnership with neighbouring NHS Trusts across Cheshire and Merseyside.  The programme is aimed at helping to create a level playing field to enable our Black Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues to progress and realise their leadership aspirations within the NHS.

It is particularly fitting, given the recent launch of our EDI strategic plan and our commitment to the recruitment of our international nurses and doctors, that we continue to support colleagues to progress and develop their career here with us at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the wider NHS. It is a privilege to be able to support this initiative alongside Tracey Lowry as our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead.  Having had previous experience of this programme and its benefits I am proud to support the Elevate Leadership Programme.

I would actively encourage Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues with leadership aspirations to apply.  The diverse voices and contributions you bring to our Trust can only further enhance our commitment to care for our patients and provide the best possible service to each other.

If you manage colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds and heritage, please don’t hesitate to support those who express an interest and do everything possible to ensure that you support their application and attendance on the programme.

Chief People Officer

Heather

We are delighted to announce applications are now open for our Elevate Leadership Development Programme.  Specifically designed to support colleagues from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds in exploring their leadership aspirations as we seek to encourage greater diversity within leadership positions across the NHS and enrich decision making and problem solving at all levels in our organisation.

This programme is a joint initiative across a number of NHS Trusts across Cheshire and Merseyside.

Why are we introducing a ‘BAME only’ Leadership Course?

The Covid Pandemic brought about an increased awareness of the inequalities that exist in our society. Many people still face complex barriers to Health, Social Care, Education and Career progression. According to research by NHS England such as Roger Kline “Snowy White Peaks” and NHS Staff Survey feedback, BAME staff experience multiple difficulties in furthering their careers compared with white colleagues. BAME colleagues across the NHS can sometimes be denied opportunities to develop and increase their skill set, attend relevant leadership training, and can feel that there is little opportunity to progress due to the weathering effects of discrimination, be it overt or covert.

In line with many other organisations, the NHS sees the benefit of a bespoke Leadership Course supporting colleagues from under represented communities, geared to discussing the issues facing Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff who wish to progress and help and support them on their leadership journey.

This will enable a safe place to discuss the barriers staff from under represented communities experience not only with regards to career development, but also in holding an ongoing leadership position or career.

We want to provide a means to support staff to discuss these barriers that may be unique to them as a minority community and consider ways to address them in a safe space with like-minded people to work through past experiences and plan a future approach, as well as learning and growing as NHS leaders and role models of the future.
