Pension auto-enrolment is here again.

Please read this briefing if you are currently opted-out of the NHS Pension scheme.

For those considering retirement

From 1 April 2022, all active members of the NHS pension scheme, regardless of age, become members of the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme.

The 1995/2008 Schemes will close and the records of those 1995/2008 members will move to the 2015 Scheme. This will happen automatically.

Due to these records being updated the process relating to applications to retire will change slightly.

For a retirement application from a 1995/2008 member with full protection (who will move to the 2015 Scheme on 1 April 2022), the following guidance applies:

Applications to retire before 31 March 2022: Should be processed as normal.

Applications to retire in April 2022: Please submit the application as normal existing processes. The Pensions team at St. Helens & Knowsley will calculate the member’s pension using 1995/2008 Scheme membership until their last day of service for when they first retire. As soon as possible after 1 April 2022, they will recalculate the pension benefits based on 2015 Scheme membership for the period from 1 April 2022 and write to the member to explain that they will get a sub-award to cover this service.

Applications to retire from May 2022 onwards: Applications for retirement from May 2022 should be uploaded to Pensions Online (POL) on or after Monday 4 April 2022. No applications should be uploaded to POL before this date. This will ensure that the members’ record has been moved into the 2015 Scheme and their pension calculations will accurately reflect both their 1995/2008 and 2015 Scheme membership.

The pensions officers are here to help you with this process. Please do not download the AW8 for from the NHS Pension website. Please request this from the pensions team and they will be able to send you the form along with the retirement brochure which will assist you in completing your pension application.
